BFA Exhibition: Life Through A Filter
Does social media impact how you see yourself?
Do you have an alternate version of yourself on social media than in real life?
Social media consumes the lives of young women today, forcing strict social constructs on their lives in the way they should act, look, and be. Young women are creating a false reality of themselves across all social platforms to adhere to the “rules” put in place by society and pop culture. Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter provide pressured guidelines to young women on what is acceptable. Telling them what clothes to wear, how to do their makeup, what to post, which is dictated by how many followers or likes that they get. These expectations lead young women to define their personal identity and confidence around their success on social media. This body of work draws attention to those issues that are too often glossed over.
Combining graphic design, portrait photography, and my personal experience with social media, I reference young women’s struggles with body image, sexuality, cyber bullying, and conformity. By creating a collection of collages focused on starting a conversation with the viewers and their relationship with social media. The purpose of this work is to make the viewer look at their life through the filter of social media and see it for what it really is instead of blindly conforming to what is culturally popular.
